The humpback's average length is 45-50 ft, and they weigh between 35 and
45 tonnes. It is distinguished by its log flippers, black and white throat
grooves, and the distinguishing black and white patterns on the underside
of their flukes. They are real showmen, very agile, and often engage in
'breaching', or will lie on their sides and roll with their large white
flippers in the air and slap the water. Humpbacks can be seen in early
spring and come inshore to feed on capelin in the early summer.
The Minke have a small pointed dorsal fin well back on the body & are
gray/bluish in color with a white belly & pointed 'beak'. They
are relatively small weighing 6-10 tonnes and 15-30 ft. long. They
are seen from April until October & love to feed on herring, capelin,
mackerel & even squid.
The finback range in size from 15-20 meters and weigh 40-50 tons. They are
extremely fast swimmers, and are distinguished by their odd color, the
left side of the head and baleen are dark and the right side is white. They
frequent the Newfoundland area from early spring until late fall and can be
seen near shore or offshore during this period
