Puffins, Mures, and Gulls

[IMG: Puffins] Numerous species of birds frequent Notre Dame Bayy. The most common are the gannet, gulls, murre, and puffins.

The Gannets, noted for their graceful flight, have white wings with black tips and a wingspan of two meters. These plunge divers will drop from heights of up to 50 meters straight down into the water in pursuit of food. They are seen from early spring until late fall.

[IMG: Puffins] The common murres, members of the auk amily, are known for their great diving depth (200 meters). The thick-billed murres are distinguished by their thick bills with a white horizontal stripe on their upper bill during the summer.

[IMG: Puffins] The Atlantic Puffin, the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial bird, is smaller and stouter than the murre & is very colourful. It's thick orange, yellow and grey bill makes it very recognizable.

Visit Little Fogo Island to view the Puffin Breeding Ground and to view many other birds species.
