The M.V. John D.

At Fogo Island Adventure Boat Tours we have two boats that are used for a variety of different tours.

For the shorter tours we offer the M.V. John D. The John D is a 23ft traditional fishing boat with a diesel engine.

It is the same type of boat that Sir. Winston Churchill called upon to evacuate his troops from Dunkirk, saving England from certain defeat in 1940.
This type of vessel is a typical boat that was used in the traditional Newfoundland inshore hook & line fishery.

The John D was designed and built by Raymond Combden of Wild Cove. He was a master boat builder whose ancestors came from England to Fogo Island to engage in the cod fishery.

The John D was used in the inshore cod fishery by John Donahue of Little Fogo Island (hence the name John D). Like many fishermen of Fogo Island he was a man of faith who loved to fish and faced the sea fearlessly, but with respect for its power.

The John D was completely rebuild and fiberglassed. It was our first vessel a 23 ft traditional fishing boat we will still operate this vessel on a limited basis at festivals and special occasions. It is a Transport Canada Inspected & Approved Vessel. It carries life jackets and safty equipment.
